Monitoring network speed while gaming

What network numbers can and cannot tell you during online games.

Most online games use very little bandwidth. Lag is usually latency (ping) or packet loss, not low speed, and a speed monitor does not measure either.

A monitor does help catch background traffic: a game launcher downloading an update or a cloud backup using your upload can cause lag. Keep a small floating window in a corner and check it when lag appears.
