Internet speed monitoring on Windows
What a Windows internet speed monitor shows, and how it differs from a speed test.
An internet speed monitor reports how much data your PC is receiving and sending right now. It answers “what is my connection doing?”, not “what could it do?”.
Monitor versus test
| Monitor | Speed test | |
|---|---|---|
| Shows | Current real traffic | Maximum measured throughput |
| Runs | Continuously | On demand |
| Uses data | Almost none itself | Downloads and uploads test data |
When it helps
Checking whether a download is progressing, whether a backup is using your upload, or whether another app is busy on the network. NetSpeedDisplay is built for this; see features.
