Network traffic monitoring on Windows
How network traffic monitoring works and what the numbers mean.
Windows keeps counters of bytes sent and received per network adapter. A traffic monitor reads those counters at intervals and subtracts the previous reading to get a rate.
What you can learn
- Whether data is flowing and in which direction
- Which adapter is active
- Rough usage over time
What you cannot learn
Traffic counters do not say which program or website is responsible. For per-app detail, use Windows Task Manager’s Performance and App history views. See monitoring data usage.
