Windows SmartScreen or antivirus warning on download

Windows may warn about a newly downloaded program. Verify the checksum and source first, and never disable your security software.

Windows SmartScreen and antivirus tools sometimes warn about programs that are small, new or not yet widely downloaded. A warning does not prove a file is bad, and it does not prove it is safe either.

Verify first

  1. Make sure you downloaded from the official download page.
  2. Compare the file’s SHA-256 checksum with the one shown on that page. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash on the zip. See installation and verification.
  3. If the values differ, delete the file and download it again.

Do not disable protection

Do not turn off antivirus or SmartScreen to get past a warning. If the checksum matches and you still prefer caution, wait, or ask for help.

What you can do

  • Check the file with your antivirus and with an online scanner, if you wish.
  • Use the portable program if you want to inspect what the zip contains before running anything. See portable mode.
  • Report a false positive to your antivirus vendor, and let us know through contact.
