Settings file guide

What the NetSpeedDisplay settings file is for, how to open and reload it, and how to back it up or move it to another PC.

NetSpeedDisplay remembers your choices, such as fonts, colors, units and startup mode, in a settings file.

Open and reload

From the right-click menu, Open Settings File opens the file and Reload Settings File makes the program read it again. See open and reload the settings file.

Back it up

  1. Choose Open Settings File to find the file.
  2. Copy it to a safe place before any big change.
  3. To restore it, replace the file and choose Reload Settings File.

Move your setup

  • Portable copy: settings can live next to the program, so copy the whole folder, including the language folder. See portable mode.
  • Installed copy: copy the settings file to the same place on the other PC, then reload.

When the file is not saved

If your changes vanish after a restart, the program may lack permission to write the file. This is most common when a portable copy sits in a protected folder such as Program Files. Move the folder to one you control. See settings not saving.

Editing by hand

Use a plain text editor and change one value at a time. Do not guess at values the menu does not offer. If a change causes trouble, restore your backup. For visual options, Reset Appearance returns the defaults.
