Internet speed monitoring for remote work

Keep video calls smooth on a work-from-home PC: watch upload speed, spot background syncs, pick the right adapter and set speed alerts.

Remote work depends on a steady connection. Most problems on video calls come from a small number of causes that a live network readout makes easy to see.

Why upload speed matters

On a video call you send video and audio as well as receive it, so upload speed matters as much as download speed. Many home plans have much lower upload than download. A cloud backup, a large file sync or a photo upload can use most of that upload bandwidth and make your video freeze, even when downloads look fine. See download speed vs upload speed.

Catch background syncs before a meeting

Keep your upload speed visible. If it is high when you are not sending anything, an app is syncing or backing up. Pause it before the call, or schedule it for later. Which app is using your internet shows how to find the cause.

Know which adapter you are watching

Work PCs often have several adapters: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a docking station and a VPN. Choose the adapter you actually use so the numbers are meaningful. If you connect through a VPN, selecting the VPN adapter shows traffic through the tunnel. See VPN network adapters explained and Windows network adapters explained.

Use alerts and a compact display

A compact floating window or taskbar readout keeps speed in view without taking over a small laptop screen. Speed alerts, where available, can tell you when speed drops below or rises above a threshold you choose. See network speed alerts and network speed monitoring on laptops.

A quick pre-meeting check

  1. Look at your current download and upload speed.
  2. Pause large syncs, backups and downloads.
  3. Prefer a cable to Wi-Fi if you can.
  4. Close unused browser tabs that play video.

If the connection still struggles, follow how to fix slow internet on Windows.
