KB/s, MB/s and Mbps explained
Why internet speeds use different units and how to convert them.
- Mbps (megabits per second) is how internet plans are sold.
- MB/s (megabytes per second) is how downloads are usually shown.
- KB/s is kilobytes per second.
A byte is 8 bits, so 8 Mbps = 1 MB/s. A 200 Mbps plan can deliver about 25 MB/s at best.
| Mbps | Approx. MB/s |
|---|---|
| 8 | 1 |
| 100 | 12.5 |
| 500 | 62.5 |
| 1000 | 125 |
Real speeds are lower because of protocol overhead and other traffic.
