How to check upload speed on Windows
Three ways to check upload speed on a Windows PC: a speed test, Task Manager and a live taskbar readout. Know which one answers your question.
Upload speed is how fast data leaves your PC. You can check it in a few ways, and each answers a different question.
1. A speed test
A web speed test sends data to a test server and reports your maximum upload. Run it with other devices idle for the best result. This answers: what can my connection do?
2. Task Manager
On the Performance tab, select your adapter. The graph shows send and receive. This answers: how much is moving right now? but only while the window is open.
3. A live taskbar readout
NetSpeedDisplay shows upload beside download on the taskbar. Start an upload, such as attaching a large file or syncing a folder, and watch the upload value. It answers: what is my PC sending at this moment?
Which do you need?
| Question | Best tool |
|---|---|
| Is my plan delivering what I pay for? | Speed test |
| Which app is uploading? | Task Manager or Resource Monitor |
| Is my upload busy during a call? | Live readout |
| How much did I send this session? | Hover totals |
Tips
- Make sure the right adapter is selected.
- Check the units. Plans use Mbps, which is eight times larger than MB/s. See the conversion table.
- Uploads are usually slower than downloads, so see why upload is low.
