Free internet speed meter for Windows

NetSpeedDisplay is a free, small Windows internet speed meter for the taskbar with a floating window and tray icon. See what it does and does not do.

If you search for a free internet speed meter for Windows, you want a small tool that shows live speed without nagging, ads or an account. NetSpeedDisplay is built for that.

What it is

NetSpeedDisplay is a free Windows program released under the MIT License. The whole download, including both the installer and the portable program, is about 1.9 MB.

What it shows

  • Live download and upload speed beside the taskbar notification area.
  • Totals sent and received since the program started, on hover.
  • Speeds in bytes (MB/s) or bits (Mb/s), with an optional short format.
  • A floating window and a tray icon with a speed tooltip, if you prefer them.

What it does not do

  • It is not a speed test. It shows traffic that is already happening.
  • It does not make network connections of its own, and it collects nothing. See the privacy page.
  • It does not need an account.

Why a meter and not a test

A speed test sends data on purpose and reports the maximum. A meter observes your real activity all day, so you notice a stalled download or a hungry backup. The two tools complement each other, as explained in how to check network speed on Windows.

Get started

  1. Read the system requirements.
  2. Download from the official page and verify the checksum.
  3. Install it, or run the portable program from any folder.
