Internet speed monitor for Windows 7 and 8.1

The portable NetSpeedDisplay program runs on Windows 7 SP1 to 8.1. See what is supported, what is not, and how to use it on an older PC.

Many speed meters have dropped support for older versions of Windows. NetSpeedDisplay keeps a portable program that runs on Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, as well as Windows 10 and 11.

These details come from the README shipped with the download. See compatibility for the full status.

How to use it

  1. Download the zip from the download page and verify its checksum.
  2. Extract the zip to any folder, for example a folder in your user profile.
  3. Keep the language folder next to NetSpeedDisplay.exe. The program needs it for its interface text.
  4. Run NetSpeedDisplay.exe. The speed display appears on the taskbar.

Nothing else needs to be installed: no Visual C++ Redistributable, no .NET, no drivers.

Tips for older PCs

  • Use the portable program rather than the installer. The installer requires Windows 10 or later.
  • Choose a folder your account can write to, so settings can be saved.
  • Older taskbars may look different from Windows 11. If the readout is hard to see, use the floating window or adjust the colors in Appearance.

Security note

Windows 7 and 8.1 no longer receive regular security fixes from Microsoft, so keep such a PC off untrusted networks where you can. That is general advice, not something NetSpeedDisplay changes. Read the security page for how the program itself behaves.
