What to look for in a Windows internet speed meter

A practical checklist for choosing a taskbar internet speed meter: accuracy, adapter handling, size, privacy, compatibility and display options.

Not every speed meter is built the same way. Use this checklist before you install one.

1. Does it count the right traffic?

PCs often have virtual adapters from VPNs and virtual machines, and a careless meter can count the same traffic twice. Look for sensible adapter handling and the option to choose adapters yourself. NetSpeedDisplay counts physical adapters by default and lets you pick by hand.

2. Is it small and light?

A monitor should not become the thing slowing your PC. Check the download size, whether it needs extra software, and its memory and CPU use in Task Manager. See lightweight monitoring tools for Windows.

3. Is it private?

A tool that watches your network should not send data. Check whether it makes connections of its own, asks for accounts or shows ads. Read the privacy policy.

4. Does it fit your Windows version?

Support for older versions varies. Compare the requirements with your PC. See compatibility.

5. Can you read it?

Look for font, size and color options, light and dark taskbar support and a floating alternative for crowded taskbars.

6. Does it show units you understand?

You should be able to switch between bytes and bits, since plans use bits and downloads use bytes. See unit conversions.

7. Can you remove it cleanly?

A good tool has a plain uninstall and a portable option that leaves nothing behind. See uninstalling or removing.
